I’d like to share my first impression and experience as a running coach using technology to assist myself with one and only purpose to better my knowledge in an effort to help my athletes excel in their pursuit to fulfill their goals in the most scientific way in combination with my own personal know how and experience. For this task I emplaced my trust in the application Science Training which boasts its ability to provide applications with algorithms capable of following runners progress throughout the training cycle giving invaluable information evaluating an athletes physical condition, stress levels , fatigue but also their readiness for race day.

Further down I’d like to list some of the first real benefits I witnessed. Problem solving solutions: One problem that science training comes to solve is that of how much of what has been scheduled is actually executed with daily notifications alerting the coach of missed or altered workouts which is vital for the continuation and design of the program thus not eliminating communication but enhancing it as to dig deeper into why they were missed or altered (due to illness? fear of over training? Fear of oncoming injury? Lack of time, commitment?)

Performance Graphs: The performance graphs basically are indicators of an athlete’s general training with options of evaluating the athlete on a weekly basis (microcycle),monthly (mesocycle), or even up to a yearly basis (macrocycle), showing stress, form, fatigue and race readiness. How does this correlate to real life situations? During my six month experience of using Science Training there have been very accurate notifications that identify either with my personal observation or with the athletes feeling for example notifications of athletes improving personal best meets with their feeling of being in peak condition ,notifications of overtraining coincide with an athletes feeling of fatigue ,this is where the coach’s intervention is paramount.

Also the coach no longer needs to calculate the athlete’s weekly mileage as this is done automatically as well as how much time was spent in each zone giving the coach the opportunity to specifically design the program assigning the desired percentage of stress for each training session separately. This application allows the coach to design a macrocycle based on the athlete’s goal race selecting a starting date leading up to a race date, choosing recovery weeks and weekly mileage progressions.

First results: Our team’s runners, Dimopoulos Coaching, whose training was assisted by Science Training application led us to the starting line of the Olympion Ultra Marathon 180K and the Aethlios Ultra marathon 62K which was met with great success for our runners.

What was the runners first impression of Science Training? Well first they had the reassurance that their coach is monitoring their training with a scientific tool and could make any adjustments when and if necessary. Second observing their performance gragh instilled them with the confidence they needed to face the task at hand and was a sort of guarantee that they had done a good job in their preperation.

The coach still remains irreplaceable: While running might seem simple as not much equipment is needed other than basically a good pair of shoes it is also not so uncomplicated when you want to get into all the details. How much mileage to do now for my 10K, marathon or even my ultramarathon training? When and how much recovery do I need? How and when to hydrate during different distances or weather conditions. How should I set my goals, are they realistic? What should I eat before or during my ultra race?

Some other benefits a coach can provide -individualize training -smarter training (quality training) -motivate you -be your mentor -adjust training when mishaps happen -prevent injuries.

Finally I’d like to personally thank Mr. Aris Myrkos for our exceptional cooperation and for his willingness to further desire to add other applications in an effort to benefit both coach and athlete.
